On February 18th, 2022 at approximately 1756 hours Darke County Deputies along with Ansonia Rescue, Gettysburg Fire, and Gettysburg Rescue were dispatched to the intersection of Beamsville Webster Road and Schroder Road in reference to an accident with injury. Preliminary investigation revealed and Red and Gray 1994 Ford F-150 driven by Mark Malott ,62, of Versailles was traveling North on Schroder Road at the intersection of Beamsville Webster Road. Mr. Malott failed to yield the right of way from a stop sign traveling into the path of a Taupe 2012 Lincoln Mk-x driven by Darla Allread ,61, of Versailles who was traveling West bound on Beamsville Webster Road. The vehicles struck in the intersection. Mr. Malott was treated and released at the scene by Ansonia Rescue. Ms. Allread was extracted by mechanical means by Gettysburg Fire and was transported to Wayne ER by Ansonia Rescue. Ms. Allread's front seat passenger, Randy Allread, 63, of Versailles was also transported to Wayne ER by Ansonia Rescue. Two Juvenile passengers in Ms. Allread's vehicle were also treated and released at the scene. Mr. Malott was arrested at the scene for Operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol. Mr. Malott was also found to be driving under suspension. Mr. Malott was charged with OVI, Driving under suspension, and failure to yield from a stop sign. UPDATED INFORMATION: The name of the rear van passenger that was pronounced deceased on the scene has been identified as Hearold Evans (86), of Fort Recovery Ohio. The Darke County Sheriff’s Office has also learned that Mr. Alderman succumbed from the injuries of the crash at Miami Valley Hospital. DARKE COUNTY DEPUTIES INVESTIGATE FATAL ACCIDENT On February 17th, 2022 at approximately 7:58 a.m. Darke County Sheriff’s Deputies along with Greenville Township Rescue, Greenville Township Fire Department, the City of Greenville Fire Department, Ansonia Rescue, Union City Rescue, Darke County Coroner's Office, and the Darke County Sheriff's Office Accident Reconstruction Team, responded to the intersection of State Route 49 and Hunter Road on an accident with injury. Preliminary investigation revealed a gray 2015 Honda Accord, driven by Coty Alderman (27), of Troy, was traveling westbound on Hunter Road, approaching the intersection of State Route 49. Mr. Alderman failed to yield the right of way to a blue 2014 Ford E-350 transit van, traveling southbound on State Route 49, driven by Rex Zizelman (74), of Celina. Mr. Alderman traveled into the path of Mr. Zizelman, and was struck on the passenger side of his vehicle. The vehicles then traveled off the roadway before coming to rest on the southwest side of the intersection. Mr. Alderman was extricated from the vehicle by mechanical means and transported to Wayne Hospital by Greenville Township Rescue. Mr. Zizelman was also transported to Wayne Hospital by Greenville Township Rescue. Both subjects were picked up by Mobile Intensive Care Units from Miami Valley Hospital and were transported to Miami Valley Hospital, where both are listed in critical condition. A front seat passenger of the van, Roxine Beals (53), of Celina, was extricated from the vehicle by mechanical means and transported to Wayne Hospital, before being transported to Miami Valley Hospital, where she is listed in stable condition. A rear passenger of the van, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced deceased at the scene. Identification of the deceased is pending next of kin notification. This accident remains under investigation.

Darke County Sheriff Toby L. Spencer would like to remind Darke County residents to be vigilant in keeping our children safe as we prepare for trick or treat events this Halloween season. As the weather turns to fall and signifies the Halloween season is upon us it means many of our Darke County Communities will be having fun events for children and adults alike. Sheriff Spencer asks citizens to keep the following safety points in mind as you enjoy the many community events this year. Many communities in Darke County hold community wide events during given times and at central locations. These events are often designed to keep people safe while allowing everyone to participate in seasonal traditions like trick or treat. We recommend you check local listings for such events. When taking children trick or treating, stick to neighborhoods and communities you know and keep children under adult supervision. Go to www.darkecountysheriff.org and click on the sex offender search links to check for sex offenders in your neighborhood or the neighborhoods you plan to visit. Be aware of these locations and stay away from them. Children should be clearly instructed not to enter the homes or vehicles of those you do not know or trust and close adult supervision is best practice. Costumes are always fun and an important part of the tradition. Visibility and unobstructed vision of the costume wearer should be a priority in the design. This helps the wearer to clearly see where they are going and what is coming. Visibility of people walking is important. especially during low light or night time events. Halloween is a great time for parents and caretakers to teach children and reinforce the importance of traffic safety and looking both ways when crossing streets while walking with them. Put down electronic devices while walking and watch where you are going and be aware of your surroundings. Motorists are advised to slow down and pay attention to trick or treaters and others walking in communities with Halloween events. Motorists should not engage in distracted driving while operating a vehicle and keep your attention focused on driving your vehicle. Practice defensive driving techniques by looking ahead and being prepared for any problems that may occur. Be especially vigilant at driveway and alley entrances as well as intersections. Adult Halloween Parties are common and can be fun events. The Sheriff asks that you drink responsibly and have a designated driver. Consumption of drugs and or alcohol while driving will not be tolerated by Sheriff Spencer or his Darke County Deputies. Darke County Deputies will be patrolling Darke County community roadways this Halloween season. On October 11, 2021 at approximately 4:07 P.M. Darke County Deputies along with Gettysburg Fire and Rescue responded to the 6600 block of State Route 571 on a reported head-on crash involving a dump truck and motorcycle. Preliminary investigation revealed a white 2009 Freightliner M2 dump truck driven by Gregory Friend 55, of Tipp City, OH. was traveling eastbound on State Route 571 attempting to pass another eastbound vehicle and struck a westbound silver 2003 Suzuki Bandit motorcycle head-on operated by John Neargarder 39, of Greenville. Neargarder was pronounced dead at the scene while Friend was treated and released at the scene. Assisting with the crash investigation was Darke County Sheriff's Office accident reconstruction team, Motor Carrier Enforcement from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, and Darke County Coroner's Office. This accident remains under investigation by the Darke County Sheriff's Office.

Effective October 31st, 2021 Darke County Sheriff Toby L. Spencer will be stepping down as Sheriff and retiring after 47 years of service with the Sheriff’s Office, 28 of which has been as the elected Sheriff of Darke County. Sheriff Spencer wants to thank the citizens of Darke County for supporting him and having the confidence, in him, to have Elected him for 8 terms as Sheriff. Sheriff Spencer states that “I truly am a blessed man to have served the wonderful citizens and great Darke County, Ohio.” Sheriff Spencer is retiring and leaving the Sheriff’s Office for personal reasons that have taken a toll on his life in the past couple of years. Also there are some professional reasons that Sheriff Spencer believes is not conducive to allow him to do his job that he was elected to do. “I was elected to serve and protect the citizens of Darke County, unfortunately, under the courts of Darke County, the only ones that are protected are those that continue to offend and continually break the law.
