  • CRASH INVESTIGATION

    On September 8, 2023 at approximately 10:49 p.m. Darke County Deputies along with Greenville Fire Department, Greenville Township Fire Department, Greenville Township Rescue, and Arcanum Rescue were dispatched to the intersection of State Route 49 and U.S. 127 off ramp in reference to an accident with injuries. Preliminary investigation revealed a Ford Ranger driven by, Odin Zeller (23) of Versailles, Ohio was on the U.S. 127 northbound exit ramp when he failed to yield the right of way to a Ford Mustang driven by, Dane Young (37) of Greenville. Mr. Young was traveling southeast on State Route 49 and after the collision, Mr. Zeller’s vehicle caught fire but he was able to free himself from the vehicle. Mr. Zeller was transported by Arcanum Rescue to Wayne Healthcare for minor injuries. Mr. Young and his passenger, Chase Quinn (24) of Greenville, were both transported to Wayne Healthcare initially by Greenville Township Rescue, but later transferred to Miami Valley Hospital to be treated for suspected serious injuries. This investigation remains under investigation by the Darke County Sheriff’s Office.

  • FATAL CRASH INVESTIGATION

    On September 3, 2023 at approximately 7:23 a.m. Darke County Deputies along with Gettysburg Fire and Rescue responded to a one-vehicle crash with unknown injuries in the 7400 block of US 36. Upon arrival of the first Deputy, it was determined this was a fatal crash. Preliminary investigation revealed a silver 2016 Jeep Patriot driven by Mercedes Ballard 31, of Celina was traveling eastbound on US 36 when her vehicle traveled off the left side of the roadway driving up an embankment and colliding with trees, causing the vehicle to spin and roll over onto the passenger side. The driver was mechanically extricated from the vehicle. Further investigation revealed this crash had occurred sometime after midnight and not discovered until daylight. Speed and alcohol are suspected in this crash. This crash remains under investigation by the Darke County Sheriff's Office and Coroner's Office.

  • POWERED AIRCRAFT CRASH

    On August 28th 2023 at approximately 6:40 PM, Darke County Deputies along with Tri Village Rescue, Liberty Township Fire, and Greenville City Fire were dispatched to 4324 Palestine Hollansburg Road in reference to a power air craft accident. Preliminary investigation revealed a 1998 Buckeye Dream Machine was being operated by Devan Spurlock,37, of Bradford. Mr. Spurlock lost control of the air craft and crashed into a tree. Mr. Spurlock was trapped in the air craft suspended approximately 15 feet up in the tree. Greenville City Fire freed Mr. Spurlock from the air craft with the use of a ladder truck. Mr. Spurlock was treated at the scene by Tri Village rescue and was transported to Wayne Health Care with minor injuries. This accident remains under investigation by the Darke County Sheriff's Office.

  • CRASH INVESTIGATION

    On August 13, 2023 at approximately 1:36 PM Darke County Deputies along with Ansonia Rescue, North Star Fire and CareFlight were dispatched to 14190 Friend Road in reference to an ATV rollover injury accident. Preliminary investigation revealed a 2017 Polaris Ranger driven by a juvenile was traveling on private property when the ATV traveled off the right side of the trail and overturned onto the juvenile passenger. Emergency crews arrived on scene and lifted the ATV off of the trapped passenger. The juvenile passenger was transported to Dayton Children’s Hospital by CareFlight, the condition of the passenger is unknown at this time. This accident remains under investigation by the Darke County Sheriff’s Office.

  • CRASH INVESTIGATION

    On August 6, 2023 at approximately 10:56 a.m. Darke County Deputies along with New Madison Fire, Arcanum Rescue and CareFlight responded to the intersection of US 127 and Weavers-Ft. Jefferson Road for a two-vehicle injury accident with one vehicle rolled over. Investigation revealed a 1999 white Buick LeSabre driven by Emma Kennedy 67, of Greenville was stopped eastbound on Weavers-Ft. Jefferson Road at the intersection of US 127. Kennedy then pulled out into the intersection in front of 2008 white Ford van traveling southbound on US 127, driven by Raymond Gilbert 71, of Bradford. The white van then traveled off the right side of the roadway rolling and coming to rest on its top. Mr. Gilbert was taken to Miami Valley Hospital aboard CareFlight for his injuries. Kennedy was uninjured, and cited for failure to yield.

  • PURSUIT

    On July 22, 2023 at approximately 4:17 AM Darke County Deputies were dispatched to assist Indiana authorities in reference to a pursuit. Indiana was in pursuit of a vehicle that had been involved in a breaking and entering to a gun store located in Winchester Indiana. Once the vehicle entered Darke County, Indiana authorities along with Union City Ohio PD, Ohio State Highway Patrol, and Darke County Deputies joined the pursuit. The pursuit lasted approximately 40 minutes traveling through several areas in Darke County and City of Greenville. Once the pursuit reached the City, Greenville Police Department also assisted with the pursuit until it ended in the Village of Pitsburg. Two suspects in the vehicle fled on foot and were taken into custody a short time later. The two suspects were identified as juveniles out of Dayton Ohio. Both Juveniles were arrested and transported West Central Juvenile Detention Center. This incident remains under investigation.

  • FATAL CRASH INVESTIGATION

    On Tuesday May 16, 2023, at approximately 7:11 p.m., Darke County Deputies along with Versailles Police, Versailles Fire and Rescue, and Careflight were dispatched to the 9300 block of Jamison Road on a reported single motorcycle accident. Preliminary investigation revealed a black 2008 Yamaha Raider motorcycle, driven by Matthew Monnin 32, of Versailles, was traveling Southeast on Jamison Road approximately 0.19 miles Northwest of State Route 185 when he failed to negotiate a curve, traveling off the right side of the roadway striking the side ditch causing the motorcycle to overturn multiple times ejecting the driver before coming to rest. Mr. Monnin was pronounced dead at the scene. Monnin was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. Darke County Traffic Crash Reconstruction Team and Darke County Coroner’s Office also responded to the scene to assist with the investigation.   • CRASH INVESTIGATION

    On April 18, 2023 at approximately 1:45 p.m. Darke County Deputies along with Greenville Township Rescue and Greenville Township Fire Department were dispatched to the intersection of Children’s Home Bradford Rd and S.R. 118 in reference to an accident with injury. Preliminary investigations revealed that a tan 2015 Ford Taurus driven by Tyler Plut, (31) of Union City, Indiana was traveling westbound on Children’s Home Bradford Road at State Route 118.  Ms. Plut failed to yield the right of way to a southbound 1998 Chevy Malibu driven by Margret Hoening, (80) of Versailles, Ohio. Ms. Hoening struck Ms. Plut’s vehicle on the passenger side causing Ms. Hoening’s vehicle to travel off the right side of the road. Ms. Hoening was transported by Greenville Township Rescue to the Darke County Sheriff’s Office before being transported by Careflight to Miami Valley Hospital.  Ms. Plut was transported to Wayne Healthcare by Greenville Township Rescue. The accident remains under investigation by the Darke County Sheriff’s office.

  • FATAL CRASH INVESTIGATION

    On April 17, 2023 at approximately 1:01 PM Darke County Deputies along with Gettysburg Rescue, Gettysburg Fire Department and Bradford Rescue were dispatched to the intersection of Children’s Home Bradford Road and Auld Road in reference to a serious injury accident. Preliminary investigation revealed a black 2014 Ford Escape driven by Larry A. Szilagyi, 69 of Bradford, Ohio was westbound on Auld Road at the posted stop sign. Szilagyi failed to yield the right of way to a northbound 2011 Ford Super Duty truck driven by Leesa L. Beanblossom, 62 of Bradford, Ohio. Beanblossom struck Szilagyi’s vehicle on the driver’s side causing both vehicles to travel off the roadway coming to rest in a field. Mr. Szilagyi was pronounced dead at the scene. Mr. Szilagyi’s passenger/wife Nancy was transported to Upper Valley Hospital by Miami Valley Hospital’s mobile intensive care unit. Mrs. Szilagyi succumb to her injuries sustained in the accident. Leesa Beanblossom was transported to Wayne HealthCare, where she was treated and released. The Darke County Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Team and the Darke County Coroner’s office also responded to the scene for further investigation. This Accident remains under investigation by the Darke County Sheriff’s Office.

  • HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION

    UPDATE: 06:30PM 04/17/2023 Darke County Sheriff Mark Whittaker and Darke County Coroner Dr. Timothy Kathman release the identity of both victims of last week’s double homicide. Michelle V. Phipps, age 63, of 4289 Weavers- Fort Jefferson Road Greenville, Ohio and James T. Donnelly, age 57, of the same address. Both victims were stabbed to death. Deputies discovered the victims early Friday morning, April 14, 2023, in their residence in Neave Township. The discovery was prompted by reports made in the Sheriff’s Office lobby by acquaintances of the victim and the suspect reporting suspicion that a homicide might have occurred at the home. Darke County deputies responded to the home on April 13, 2023 at approximately 6:30 PM on a 911 hang-up call from the residence. Upon arrival, Adam Uchyn met deputies in the driveway. Uchyn is a resident of this address and claims to have made the call. He filed a report alleging a theft and assault had occurred and the perpetrator had left the scene. This report was a ruse he created to prevent the deputies from discovering the murder that had likely just occurred. Investigators now believe the 911 caller is victim, Michele Phipps. The call abruptly ended with only the address provided by the caller. 911 Dispatchers attempted to call the number back but there was no answer. The deputies were advised that they were responding to a 911 hang-up. The deputies did not know the gender of the 911 caller. The deputies took the complaint from Adam Uchyn at face value since they had no further information and was unaware of what had actually happened inside the house. Uchyn remained outside during the interaction, which lasted approximately 40 minutes. Adam Uchyn, as of the time of this press release, is being held in a jail in Chicago, IL awaiting extradition on a felony probation violation warrant. This case remains under investigation and is being reviewed by Darke County Prosecutor R. Kelly Ormsby, III pending appropriate charges on this homicide case. ---------- UPDATE: 10:00PM 04/14/2023 As of 9:15pm on 04/14/2023 Darke County Sheriff's Office received notification that the Chicago Police Department has taken this subject Adam Uchyn into custody on a felony probation warrant out of Darke County. This warrant is unrelated to the homicide. Thank you to the Chicago Police Department and Elmhurst IL, Police Department who assisted us throughout this afternoon in locating Uchyn. This case is still early in the investigation and updates will be provided as the case progresses. ---------- Darke County Sheriff Mark Whittaker reports that his office is investigating a double homicide at a residence in the 4200 block of Weavers-Fort Jefferson Road in Neave Township, south of Greenville, Ohio. On April 14, 2023 at approximately 4:56 AM, two adult female witnesses came in to the Darke County Sheriff’s Office to report a possible homicide. Darke County Deputies responded to an address on Weavers-Fort Jefferson Road to investigate and discovered the bodies of one adult male and one adult female. Investigators from the Darke County Sheriff’s Office and the Darke County Coroner’s Office have been called to the scene to investigate. Darke County Deputies are seeking Adam Uchyn, age 39, a known resident of the address where the homicide is located. He is a person of interest in this case. Uchyn is believed to have left the area in a white 2022 Chevrolet Equinox, Ohio license plate JDM8117.   • CRASH INVESTIGATION

    On April 15th, 2023 at approximately 6:13 p.m. Darke County Deputies along with New Madison Fire, Tri-Village Rescue, Arcanum Rescue, and Medflight were dispatched to the intersection of New Madison Coletown Road and Hollansburg Arcanum Road in reference to a two vehicle injury accident. Preliminary investigation revealed a gray 2017 Jeep Renegade driven by Julie Matamoros (40) of Greenville was traveling Northbound on New Madison Coletown Road and failed to yield the right of way to a blue 2020 Buick Encore, driven by a Leona Mohrmeyer (80) of Hollansburg, who was traveling westbound on Hollansburg Arcanum Road. Ms. Mohrmeyer was transported to Wayne Hospital by Tri-Village Rescue with minor injuries. Her passenger, Sandra Metzcar (78) of Hollansburg, was also transported to Wayne Hospital by Arcanum Rescue with minor injuries. Ms. Matamoros was transported to Miami Valley Hospital by Medflight with serious but non-life threatening injuries. This accident remains under investigation by the Darke County Sheriff’s Office.
