On March 16th 2022 at approximately 8:43 p.m. Darke County Sheriff’s Deputies along with Tri Village Rescue, Arcanum Rescue and New Madison Fire Department were dispatched to the 3100 block of State Route 121 on an injury accident.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a white 2008 Ford Ranger, driven by Kyle Smith (53), of New Madison, was traveling south on State Route 121 north of Hollansburg Sampson Road. Mr. Smith was gaining speed after slowing for a vehicle turning in front of him. A Red 2014 Chevrolet Cruze, driven by Jamie Hemmelgarn (18), of New Madison, was also traveling southbound on State Route 121. Ms. Hemmelgarn failed to maintain assured clear distance and struck Mr. Smith’s vehicle in the rear end. Mr. Smith’s vehicle left the roadway and overturned.

Ms. Hemmelgarn and her occupant, a juvenile, were both transported to Wayne Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Mr. Smith and his passenger, Yvonne Shimangle (50), of New Madison, were also transported to Wayne Health Care with non-life threatening injuries.
