CHILD
DEATH INVESTIGATION
The
Darke County Coroner's Office and the Darke County Sheriff's
Office are investigating the death of a twelve year old child
identified as Jordan T. Pond of Versailles. On Friday Evening,
August 20th, 2010 at approximately 10:00 PM, the child suffered a
sudden cardiac arrest at the Darke County Fair near the area of
Gate 6. An EMS unit stationed on the grounds came to the aid of
the child. The child was rushed to Wayne Hospital across the
street from the fairgrounds where he was later pronounced dead.
Darke
County Coroner Dr. T. Kathman reports that preliminary findings
suggest that the cause of death is natural. A final determination
on cause and manner of death is pending further forensic testing
which could take several weeks.
There
is no evidence at this time to suggest that the child's death is
associated with his attendance at the Darke County Fair.

DARKE
COUNTY SHERIFF WARNS OF POSSIBLE CRIMINAL ACTIVITY
The
Darke County Sheriff’s Office has received information that
surrounding counties are experiencing a rash of burglaries and
motor vehicle thefts. This criminal activity has been occurring
close to the Darke County line both day and night. Darke County
Sheriff’s Deputies continue to be vigilant in patrols; however
we need the assistance of our local citizens. Darke County Sheriff
Toby L. Spencer asks citizens to be on the look out and
immediately report any suspicious activity they might observe.
Such activity can be reported to the Sheriff 24 hours a day by
calling 937-548-2020. It is important that reports are called in
at the time they are observed to allow the deputies a timely
response and investigation. If able to do so safely, please
provide a description of any vehicles or persons associated with
the suspicious activity.
The Darke County Sheriff makes the following suggestions to reduce
your chances of becoming a victim of crime. Never leave your keys
in the car, remove valuable items and lock your vehicle doors.
Many of the motor vehicle thefts involved was the result of owners
leaving the keys in the ignition. Lock the doors to your home and
secure outbuildings. Do not leave garage and outbuilding doors
standing open unnecessarily. This only advertises your valuables
to thieves that may be scouting your neighborhood for their next
victim.
The Darke County Sheriff encourages property owners to record and
document manufacturer names, model numbers and serial numbers to
their valuables. This information is necessary to increase the
chances of property recovery if you should become a victim of
crime and sustain a theft.
When citizens and law enforcement work together we make our
community a less attractive place for criminals and a safer place
to live and work. __________________________________________________________________

An
initial investigation reveals that the unidentified male subject
was apparently attempting to burn a large brush pile on the

have been using an accelerant to start the fire. It appears that
the male subject's clothing caught fire, causing the male subject
to fall down in the field, possible starting the cornfield fire.
At this time, the cause of death is pending a forensic

estimated twenty acres of land was involved in the fire as well as

WINTER
WEATHER TRAVEL TIPS/INFORMATION
As winter approaches and the chances of snow
and inclement weather continue to increase, the Darke County
Sheriff’s Office and Sheriff Toby L. Spencer want to encourage
everyone to utilize safe winter travel practices.
Use slower acceleration and slower speeds.
Avoid heavy steering and braking. Allow extra time to reach your
destination during inclement weather.
- Drive with your headlights on.
- Don't get overconfident with
four-wheel drive. It won't help you stop any faster.
- Winter road conditions often
result in longer stopping distances. Give yourself room.
If you have anti-lock brakes, press the pedal down firmly and
hold it. If you don't have anti-lock brakes, gently pump the
pedal.
- Slow down when approaching
intersections, off-ramps, bridges or shady spots. These all
have potential to develop black ice.
- Avoid abrupt actions while
steering, braking or accelerating to lessen your chance of
losing control.
- Look farther ahead in traffic.
Actions by other drivers will alert you to problems and give
you extra reaction time.
- Trucks take longer to stop.
Don't cut in front of them.
- Avoid using cruise control or
overdrive. Don't let your car make a bad decision for you.
It is important to check travel and road
conditions before traveling. The Darke County Sheriff’s Office
new website (www.DarkeCountySheriff.org)
will have the latest information on any issued snow emergencies.
Snow emergency information is also passed on to all local media
including print and web media, local radio stations and local
television stations.
Snow Emergency Definitions:
Level 1 Snow/Ice Advisory: Roadways are slick
and hazardous. Extra caution should be used if traveling. Travel
is not restricted.
Level 2 Snow Emergency: Roadways are
hazardous with blowing and drifting snow. Roads can be very icy.
Only those who feel it is necessary to drive should be out on the
roadways. People should contact their employer to see if they
should report to work. Obviously, if you are driving, use extreme
caution.
Level 3 Snow Emergency: ALL roadways are CLOSED
to non-emergency personnel. No one should be driving during this
condition unless it is absolutely necessary or a personal
emergency exists. All employees should contact their employer to
see if they should report to work. Anyone traveling on the
roads may subject themselves to arrest.
If at
all possible, please avoid calling the Darke County Sheriff’s
Office for information concerning snow emergencies and or road
conditions. If inclement weather is affecting the region, it is
likely that the dispatch center is overwhelmed with emergency
calls.

LAB & EXPLOSIVE DEVICE DISCOVERED
On September 1, 2009 at 7:15 PM Darke County
Sheriff’s Detectives responded to
4295 Hunter Road
in
Greenville
Township
to search the premises for stolen property.
Upon arrival detectives did recover a stolen dune buggy
among other possible stolen property.
While searching a garage at that location detectives
discovered a methamphetamine drug lab.
The Darke County Sheriff’s Office Clandestine Drug Lab

a dummy grenade. The
Dayton Police Department Bomb Squad responded to the scene and
detonated the device in a controlled manner on the premises.
The Dayton Bomb Squad also assisted
Darke
County
deputies with collecting and removing evidence that could be used
to make other similar devices.
The Greenville Township Fire Department and the Greenville
Township Rescue responded on this incident.
A private contractor was called and cleaned up the
hazardous materials from the drug lab.
Emergency crews were on scene overnight for 16 hours.
No citizens or officers were injured during this incident.
The case remains under investigation by the Darke County
Sheriff’s Office. Two

The Darke County Sheriffs Office and Sheriff
Toby Spencer are pleased to announce the redesign and update of
the Darke County Sheriff’s Office website. The website can be
found at www.DarkeCountySheriff.org
“I’m very excited with all of the changes that have
taken place on our website. The website is easy to navigate and
should provide the citizens with plenty of resourceful
information,” Sheriff Toby Spencer stated.
The jail roster and sexual offender registry are linked on
the website. Information concerning Press Releases and Winter Snow
Emergencies will also be posted and updated as warranted. One new
feature that has been implemented is an archiving of Winter Snow
Emergencies so that businesses and employees can have immediate
access to search when Snow Emergencies were issued and lifted.
The website was redesigned by 911 Coordinator/Administrator
Brandon Redmond. If you have any questions or information requests
regarding the new website, please contact Redmond at 937-547-3911.
